Biblical Scholar.
Tremellius was born of Jewish parents in Ferrara, Italy. He was converted to Christianity by Reginald Pole in 1540 and he became a Protestant under the influence of peter martyr. After a period of teaching in Strasbourg, he was invited by Thomas cranmer to settle in England where he became the King’s Reader in Hebrew at the University of Cambridge. With the accession of Queen mary, he left England and he taught Hebrew first at Heidelberg and then at Sedan. He is remembered for his important translations of the Old Testament from Hebrew and of the New Testament from Syriac, both into Latin. For many years his was the standard translation used by Protestants.
